Two fitness businesses, $19,422.37 a month and a wife that was able to retire at the age of 30.
Life is good but it hasn’t always been this way.
I’ve had to shed many tears, bump my head on several obstacles and even entertain the thought of quitting. I think I even fought bouts of depression as I struggled trying to force my fitness business to work.
I definitely don’t want you to have to endure some of the same emotions and turmoil that I did, so I’m going to give you 3 powerful boot camp marketing tips that have helped me reach the point of success. Believe me, success isn’t about the money, although it doesn’t hurt, but about the peace of mind that I have the opportunity to share with those that I love the most.
You deserve the same thing if you don’t have that already and here are the 3 tips that will help you get there:
1. Create The Ultimate Experience
Too many “personal trainers” are just showing up to their sessions. Just there because the have bills due at the end of the month. That’s not you; right?
The best marketing you could ever do is to create the ultimate fitness experience. When your campers come to see you they should view that time as their getaway from everything else that life deals them. Here are a few
things you can do:
- Greet each person individually with a smile every time they show up
- Praise them with enthusiasm when they reach a milestone
- Ask them about something personal in their life
- Send them a personal card or letter
- Personal phone calls to tell them they are doing a great job
- Recognize them in front of others
- Remember and recognize their birthdays and anniversaries
- 15 minute coaching calls
2. Build Strategic Alliances
Let’s face it. Every smart business owner knows that we will not survive on our own. So, it is important to know how you can help another business and how the may be able to help you in return. We call this…creating a win/win
situation.
Your goal should be to joint venture (JV) with as many other businesses as possible. You always want to go in with a giving hand and here are two things that will help you speak with confidence every time you approach a
potential JV:
A. Make a list of every possible thing that your business has to offer. I mean everything…think outside the box. Keep this list and continue to add to it as ideas hit you over the months and years.
B. Take the decision maker to lunch. Remember, you are looking to build a long-term relationship with some very key business owners. There is nothing like getting them out of their typical environment to level the playing
field and begin that relationship by you doing something nice for them.
3. Unconventional Promotions
People have become desensitized to normal advertising and self-promotion. You have to do something to catch their attention and that means getting a little crazy sometimes.
Referral Programs – I did one where I gave away a month free for every referral that signed up during a 2 week period. This created a frenzy and I had a couple of campers that got 4 free months of boot camp. All total I
brought in 16 new campers in 2 weeks.
JV Promotions – Now that you have the joint ventures that we talked about earlier, you can run some great promos with them. I partnered with a liquor store with a promo called “Drink Wine, Look Fine.”
Concept – We created a “wine of the month” at this local liquor store and every customer that buy that bottle during the month gets a free month membership to my boot camp. I get a solid 3-10 new leads a month from that.
Starting, growing and maintaining a successful fitness business can be a daunting task and also very rewarding. I’ll be honest with you, one of the biggest differences in my career was finding resources that worked so that I didn’t have to reinvent anything.
It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t tell you that the Bootcamp Blueprint was the single biggest resource that opened my eyes to how to rapidly grow my fitness boot camps to close 200 members, 7 locations and 5 trainers. I love logging into the Bootcamp Blueprint forum to pick and choose the business tools that I want to use for that month.
I hear that the guys (Pat, Nick, Jim and BJ) are about to open the Bootcamp Blueprint up again to accept new members and I have tell you, “You do not want to miss the opportunity to have a full business placed in your lap.”
I’ll leave it at that.
I’d love to hear from you so post your comments below and feel free to add any boot camp growing tips that you might have for our fellow fitness professionals out there.

Way to go Donovan! you are rocking it and it is awesome!
great tips!
Awsome post. I want to be just like you when I grow up, Donovan!
I’m with Greg on this one! One day I wanna be like Donovan!
Donovan- You are a true inspiration! Thank you for affirming that the ‘keys’ to fitness and Bootcamp success are making certain that we do what all other EXCELLENT businesses do- they focus on making their client’s time with them an Experience every time.
Sweating and the Burn are not enough, the direction you’ve given in tips 1. 2. and 3. will elevate the status and perception of a workout session to being seen as a Fitness Business. Something very new (and rewarding) in our industry.
Thank you to Pat, Nick, Jim (and BJ) for helping you and so many others through the Bootcamp Blueprint, up to a whole new level. The view is fantastic from here.
Donovan,
What is totally amazing is watching this transformation of your business and your life first hand mate. You work your backside off and it has shown in your results.. and to go with that.. you are always growing and contributing which are 2 key areas that will always bring you to a high level of success bcuz it isn’t just about you.
You have some great tips above and for me what really stands out is number 1… it is so true that we all need to focus on creating the experience for our clients that they can’t help but rave about… and you are certainly doing it.
Looking forward to meeting up with you again soon mate.
And peeps if you are keen to be a part of the blueprint… know this. It will transform and take your business to a level such as Donovans… ONLY if you take the actin and use it to the max. There will always be peaks and valleys and it may take a little longer to take off than what you would have hoped… but as our man Zach Even Esh always says… most people give up an inch before the tipping point. The same point that if you took just one more step forward… all your successes will come to be. You can be certain that BCBP will help get you to that tipping point much faster.
All the best
AT
P.S. Thanks again D
Dude, YOU ROCK man!
Ever since I heard the interview you did with Craig Ballantyne, I knew you were the REAL Deal! It was great meeting you in Louisville at Bootcamp Bootcamp, and we are already utilizing and incorporating most if not all of your tools ad ideas you have provided!

Trent

Great job on the JV’s. Keep on rocking man and I hope to see you again soon. Let me know if I can do anything for you my man.
Donovan,
1) Awesome story!
2) Peace of mind. THAT is what the money is for.
3) Everyone reading needs to understand you’ve built this in less than a year!!!!
Jim
Hey Donavan,
Awesome Post, I actually had a coaching call with you about 4 months ago and because of some of the strategies and topics we discussed I was able to take my business from single digits to currently over 50 members, 2 locations and 2 trainers with 3-6 new leads a week now!
I have gone through some of those emotions though already being one person is extremely challenging when running your own business. I just remind myself that there is a light and I now reward myself each week with some extra time off for me if I sign 4 people a week, if not I keep pluggin away.
Thanks for the words and it is a true inspiration!
Mike
Donavan,
Great post, it is about action and little steps to get to the big steps. I have let fear rule my life for along time. I need to step out of the dark and into the light. I have been afraid to post anything feeling unworthy of support. I know I am a great coach and motivator, but I let a few of the whiners affect me. i need to take the bull by the horns and get my numbers up. I like all the info you posted. I have been too focussed on the workout and need to focus more on the total experience.
David
Donovan,
Good things happen to good people.. Great things happen to great people that bust A..s.
My friend I am glad we are on the same team.
Thanks
The Band Man
Hey Donovan
Thanks for the 3 big tips! I got to work at getting more JVs!
Thanks for the motivation! As motivators ourselfs we still need encouragement. Running your own biz in the beginning is daunting at times…I’m definetly feeling it. Just staying persistant and learning from those that have been there is the path to success that I’m on. I also congratulate you on hitting a great milestone.
@TC – There you go TC…great JV’s are great business drivers. Remember to give to them first. Thanks for commenting.
@Michael Wolfe – Thank you Michael. Hang in there and push through the tough times. Everytime you hit a challenge, embrace it and build a method to lesson that challenge, should it ever come up again.
As you learn from others, which is awesome, don’t lose who you are to the core. Remember, everything that someone else is doing may not be for you but take what fits and use it.
Be the best Michael there is.
@Jim Labadie – Jim, as you well know, I was on a path of business failure when I decided to do the right thing and invest in 3 of the best coaches in the industry (Pat, Nick and yourself). What a great decision!
Thanks man.
Donovan,
Great Post. You certainly deserve all the success you are achieving. You’re kicking tail so keep up the awesome work.
Clint
Hey Donovan,
Your story has been an inspiration for me for a long time! You get out there and put your feet to the pavement and make things happen! I am happy for you and your success! Keep kickin’ some serious butt!
I agree, becoming a part of the BCBP has helped me grow my business in ways that I didn’t see possible! So, thanks to you guys as well!
Erik
Great post Donovan!
You are absolutely right. Creating an experience that your campers and clients look forward to is key! You need to make it where they feel as if they are missing out on something if they’re not in your program. That feeling of disconnect is huge.
And all the tools for creating an amazing experience for your campers are in the BCBP, so get into this elite program before your competition does
@Erik Brown – Hey Erik, I really appreciate your kind words. Truly, I just want to do my small part to help as many people as possible.
The Bootcamp Blueprint has done some great things for you, I know. Keep pushing forward and making things happen.
Donovan,
Thanks for the great motivation and information you continue to deliver!
