Fitness Referral Strategies: All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt?

A Post on Fitness Referral Strategies By Pat Rigsby

Yesterday we generated 48 new leads for our health club business without any expensive newspaper or radio ads, without a member appreciation event or even a referral contest.

We got 48 new leads for around 8 T-Shirts. (Might have been 9…I’m not sure.)

But let me back up a second.

About a week ago I was talking with our Club Manager, Lisa (who is awesome, I might add), and we were trying to decide the best approach to ask our current members for referrals.

We run a variety of fitness referral strategies, all with success, but the most effective is when we simply ask our new members to give us the names of friends and family members we can offer a free trial to. So we decided to try to do the same with existing members, but we needed a ‘hook’ to get them to give us the names.

Enter the T-Shirts.

Lisa and I decided that if we offered our members a T-Shirt in exchange for giving us names & contact information of people that they felt like would benefit and appreciate a free trial to our club.

So we went for this Fitness Referral Strategies ordered up some T-Shirts. They came in two days ago and simply posted the offer on a dry erase board in the front of the club today so that members would see it when they entered.

The result: 48 new leads on Day One.

I suspect that we’ll get about that many each of the next few days as well.

All for a few T-Shirts…that cost us about $5 each.

Maybe you ought to go order some T-Shirts;)

Not only that but when your clients wear your shirts out in public they are advertising for you.

We get about 1 client per month that say they signed up for our camp because they saw someone wearing one of our shirts…..

  2. Beautiful…simple…easy…and popular. Everyone wants a T shirt. Dont know why but they want a T shirt.

  3. I love it!
48 new leads along with some advertising on t-shirts that current members will be wearing. They are probably wearing those t-shirts around the contacts they have provided. Win win all the way.

That is a great idea. It creates excitement and doesn’t cost that much. We are looking to double our membership in the next year and are finding our members are the best sales people. Thanks for keeping it easy.

I am supposed to be the king of health club marketing, and I haven’t had 48 leads in a day in a while. K.I.S.S. is often times the best method. Nice job brother.

  6. Pat says:

Curtis – you’re still the King of Health Club Marketing! This just goes to show that if you give people some incentive they’ll help you grow your business.

  8. Hey Pat! Great Info. Where do you suggest to get the best deal on t-shirts? So many choices just wanted to see if you had any suggestions on the best place to look. Thanks!

  9. Great post Pat.

Thats a great idea use of t-shirts, people always like to wear a t-shirt if its promoting a brand etc…
Might have to try this plan.

Very interesting Pat – i had just ordered 100 t-shirts but i hadn’t even thought of giving them away in exchange for a referral… genius!
