An ‘Outside The Box’ Fitness Business

As much as we talk about choosing a niche or separating yourself from the pack, when it’s all said and done most successful fitness businesses look a lot alike.

They train in groups. They sell programs on a membership basis with EFT. They usually serve more women than men.

You can look at both of our Mastermind Groups and find more similarities than differences in the members’ businesses.Screen shot 2010 12 29 at 11.35.42 PM An ‘Outside The Box’ Fitness Business

Except for Scott Colby’s.

If you don’t know Scott, he was one of the fitness pros that originally brought attention to running bootcamps – even speaking on them at the first Ryan Lee Bootcamp.

Scott eventually built a successful business online and decided to leave his bootcamp business in Dallas to move to Colorado and enjoy the outdoors – and came up with an idea for a different type of fitness business – a fitness retreat. After testing this business model with an initial group, Scott’s built a brand new business called Fitness Adventures USA.

I’ll let Scott describe it:

Thanks Pat!

Fitness Adventures USA is a company that provides healthy, active vacations for people that want to get fit, have fun and be adventurous.

These are week long active vacations and the participants enjoy activities like bootcamp, hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, yoga, healthy cooking classes, motivational coaching, horseback riding, canoeing and wine tasting.

Imagine a vacation where you get to travel and enjoy the outdoors while having EVERYTHING from your daily itinerary taken care of to having delicious home cooked, HEALTHY meals served to you throughout the day.

This is Fitness Adventures USA in a nutshell.

But, as it turns out, it’s much more than this.

The adventures are a tremendous opportunity to enjoy an inspiring, motivating adventure in one of many beautiful parts of the United States.

But it won’t just give you a jumpstart in your fitness.

According to all of the participants of the first Adventure, this was a life-changing experience for them – one that allowed them to achieve a greater level of excellence than they thought possible.

And certainly something they could use as motivation and inspiration to improve all areas of their life.

For 2011, we’ve got 5 adventures coming up – 3 Adventures in Estes Park, Colorado, 1 in the California Wine Country and one in Vermont next fall.

You can read more about them and see pictures and videos on our new website

Pat here again. Pretty cool, right? Scott basically built a completely new fitness business model that combined the personal coaching that he enjoyed and the outdoor experiences that he initially moved to Colorado for.

Scott is a great example of someone being willing to step outside of the norm and create something that he felt the industry was missing. Too often people play follow the leader in business – but this is a great example of how you can break away if you’re willing to take a little risk.

So instead of simply looking what others are doing and mimic it – don’t be afraid to look for what they’re missing and capitalize on it.

Also – if you think your clients might be interested in Scott’s Trips, he has a referral program for fitness professionals where you can earn a substantial commission. For more info on Scott’s referral program, email him at fitnessadventuresusa@gmail.com

Dedicated to your success,

Pat

    Great concept, Scott.
My family and I came up from New Jersey to Connecticut yesterday to visit with some of my wife Kathy’s family for the New Year. I just shared this blog post with my brother in law (former marketing exec.for Master Card)and he thought it was brilliant. Anyone in the fitness industry would have to agree that your idea IS brilliant! Great success to you, Brother Scott.
    Peace-
    Matt

Colorado air makes you creative ;)

  4. Good to know. I had a similar idea a while back that I haven’t acted on yet. I got the idea from Fit Pro Travel except I wanted to do it for the public, not other fit pros. Great to see it’s a successful model if you do it right.
