Do You Know What You Want?

I wonder if most fitness professionals really know what they want.

Dan Kennedy talks about being certain that you don’t create a success that you hate.

Do you know what you want?

rr Do You Know What You Want?

When I first began coaching baseball I dreamed of winning 30 games in a season and earning $30,000 a year. Considering that the team I was taking over had never won more than 19 games in a season and the job paid $3000 – those seemed like success to me.

We eventually won as many as 48 games in a season and averaged well over 30 wins for my time as a coach – and during my last couple of years I even earned a bit more than $30,000.

But what I never considered was that being a small college baseball coach meant more time fundraising than on baseball fundamentals and hundreds of hours riding on vans and eating at McDonalds because our budget didn’t allow for anything else.

Marketing Without Spending a Fortune

burn money Marketing Without Spending a Fortune

One of the most common questions I get goes something like this:

“How can I fill up my schedule without spending a fortune on ineffective advertising or direct mail?”

What they really mean is:

I don’t have enough clients.  Can you help?

Well, the better question is what did I NOT do in the past few weeks to cause me not to have as many clients as I want?  I guess what I’m saying is the answer lies in your own actions.  Every day you get to decide whether you’re going to work on your business or just complain about the problems within your business.

So, with that in mind, here are several things you can do ASAP to get things rolling – if you’re willing to take ACTION:

What Are You Missing?

puzzle What Are You Missing?

In golf, they talk about fixing one aspect of your game and shaving a handful of strokes off of your score all at once.  If you get better at putting, all of the sudden those 90’s that you’re shooting become 85’s.  If you get better at pitching and chipping those 85’s become 80’s.

I think that same approach will work for improving your business numbers too.  I’m going to use bootcamps as my example, but this approach works for any fitness business. Here are some areas for improvement and some simple steps to make that happen.

ssu 3 Things You Can Do To Build A Successful Business

This coming weekend I’m headed to Portsmouth, Ohio to visit the University that I coached at.  They’re honoring the team I coached that finished 5th at the World Series 10 years ago so I’ll get to see some of my former players and I’ll throw out the first pitch for their game.

Should be fun.

Well, as you’ve heard me mention a number of times before – coaching taught me a lot.  And because we were a program with pretty limited resources I had to learn how to achieve success by doing some things differently than the competition since we weren’t going to compete by having more scholarships (we had about 1/10 the number our best competitors had) or a nicer facility (we used a city owned park.)

I want to tell you a little about my friends and Bootcamp Blueprint members Nancy & Dean Carlson. I think you’ll find their story inspiring and educational…

In May of 2008 Nancy & Dean Carlson opened Get Fit NH Bootcamp with one paying member and 7 friends that thought they were a little crazy but were willing to try it out.

They started outside in their backyard, but knew they needed an indoor facility as winter in New Hampshire isn’t outdoor camp friendly.

After looking at a variety of options Nancy & Dean ultimately decided to open their first facility on their own property – which they opened in October 2008.
