I’m off to speak at the AFPA Spring Conference, but I wanted to be sure I told you about a conversation I had yesterday with one of my private coaching clients.

She’s a trainer who’s going from working in the industry part-time to full-time. So she’s really working on ramping up her ‘book’. Yesterday she explained to me that one of her clients, who she doesn’t think will be able to afford her services much longer, is a doorman. She lives in NYC, so you know a building that has a doorman has residents with disposable income. Talk about hitting the jackpot!

How so you ask?

Do you have any idea how many times those residents see their doorman? All the friggin’ time! This guy has a significant amount of fat to shed. And when he does you know full-well that all those wealthy people he’s holding the door open for are going to be wondering how he did it.

People in this position are called ‘sneezers’. As in, they spread the good word rapidly. They can help build your business almost overnight. So as we discussed during her coaching session she needs to keep this man as a client. She may have to reduce her rate. She may have to train him for next to nothing. But there is no better marketing than this. A walking, talking billboard that prospects who have the money to afford her see all the time. And I mean ALL THE TIME! That’s priceless!

Now there are other considerations, of course. He has to make the commitment and do the work necessary to succeed or the deal is off. And he also needs to be aware that this isn’t charity, this is a marketing expense for her. That means that the people he ‘sneezes’ to about her are told what her regular rates are.

So, who are the ‘sneezers’ in your area? Your situation might be different from her’s, but no matter where your business stands currently you can use this information. Are you looking:

- for more speaking engagements?

- more clients?

- corporate clients?

- to sell info-products?

Seriously, who should you be willing to work with for F R E E so that they do the same for you what this doorman is going to do for her? This is a bonafide marketing expense. You could be spending the dough on direct mail or flyers or your website or whatever. But walking, talking billboards will kick their a** every single time.

You always want what you can't have

Sorry I didn’t write to you last week. I’m working on a little something that’s taking up the vast majority of my time.

This week I want to give you a little something to think about. I want you to think about little kids. Yes, little kids. And when I write little, I mean under 5 years old.

Think about one you know. Maybe it’s your kid. Maybe it’s a niece or nephew. Maybe it’s a neighbor’s kid. Doesn’t matter.

Now that you’ve got this little ‘angel’ in your mind’s eye I’d like you to imagine a scenario where you tell this child that he or she can’t have something. Imagine the response you get. Chances are if it’s something they are even remotely interested they are going to go nuts.

Am I wrong? Doesn’t just about every little kid go bonkers when you tell them they can’t have something? Don’t they want it about a bazillion more times than they originally did?

Well, if I’m guessing right, you too were that age at one time. And if you’ve never noticed, most adults are nothing more than big kids. Yeah, that’s right, we still want what we can’t have.

And that includes people who are interested in hiring you. Try telling a prospect up-front you don’t think they’d be a good fit for your program because they don’t seem serious enough.

Think they’d tell you to go straight to h*ll?

Far from it. Remember, they’re nothing more than a 3 year old kid in a 40 year old body. They’ll start to fight to become your client. They’ll plead their case. They’ll do whatever it takes to convince YOU they deserve to be YOUR client. This is what I call the ‘Velvet Rope’. It works like magic.

Far cry from the usual crap you’ve been taught about sales, huh?

And in case you doubt this works, this is from one of my customers:

‘Due to the fact that our training business is within a gym that gives every new member a ‘free’ session with a trainer and nutritional coach, we do not have as much control gaining the interest of prospects who truly want to be here to purchase what we have to offer. In the past, this had the potential of creating a negative thought process with my staff. It was common for them to go into an introductory session with the assumption that the prospect would not buy, thus a waste of time.

However, since we have begun to implement the techniques laid out in the Velvet Rope…the pressure to sell is gone and the power to tell a prospect that they do not ‘qualify’ is amazing. Prospects actually walk away from an ‘intro’ wondering why they do not fit the bill. How amazing it is to hear a prospect try to convince YOU why they are the right fit for our particular program rather than the other way around. I’ve had prospects become so excited and determined to become a part of our team, that they cannot get to their wallets fast enough!

How to Build a "Brochure" Website

Why re-invent the wheel? If someone already has a proven method of doing something, and if you’re not breaking any laws, why not just follow the leader?

I’m a jock by nature. When I first started this business I didn’t know the first thing about creating websites. And now that I know how to do my own, I still don’t know much about them! ‘Bout the only thing I do know is they aren’t nearly as difficult to deal with as you’d think.

Since I get a LOT of questions about my sites, especially my http://www.trainandgrowrich.com site, I figured the easiest thing to do is make an audio interview about it available to you. So Ryan Lee and I were going to do a F R E E tele-seminar on the subject. Problem was we just didn’t make the time to get everything all set up. But what we did do was record a 20 minute conversation on the subject.

It's all about the vibe

Some people just “get it”. Some people just don’t. Some people have the light switched turned on for them and then “get it”. Some it seems, no matter what you try to teach them, just never will.
One of the people who most certainly “gets it” is Valerie Waters. I’m very proud to tell people that she is one of my customers.

I met Valerie in person at Ryan Lee’s Boot Camp for Fitness Pros this past September. She came to Connecticut all the way from L.A. for the event. And she stayed an extra day to stay for Ryan’s ultra-exclusive, $1,000 per-person, closed-door event. While the topic of the day was all about running your own super profitable fitness tele-seminars (which Ryan is THE master at) she was there to learn and for another reason.

When asked why she decided to attend she told her fellow attendees why she plunked down $1,000 to be there that day. Her answer tells everything you need to know about why she is so mega-successful. It explains how she has come to be in the position of working with TOP celebrities and charging hundreds of dollars per session.

Valerie Waters, trainer to the stars, was there to:

Yeah, that’s right, she just wanted to be in the room. She wanted to absorb both the material and the vibe. Valerie completely “gets it”. And yes, while it is very much true that Valerie can more readily afford events like that, how do you think she got to be in that position? There were other fitness pros in the room who could easily have spent their $1,000 on something else. It could have been spent on any number of more “practical” things. But these other fitness pros “get it”, too.

Too many trainers who truly want to succeed are surrounded by other so-called fitness pros who have no real desire to do anything other than train a few people and wipe down machines. Now they might say they want to succeed…they may say they want to be wealthy…they may say they want financial freedom…they may say any number of things.

But too often those are the same trainers who would be the first to sh*t on any fellow fitness pro who had the audacity to spend $1000 to learn from guys like Ryan Lee, Alwyn Cosgrove and myself, or anyone else who knows what the hell they are talking about. You know the people I’m talking about.

Why?

Because chances are if you don’t recongnize that in other people it’s because you ARE that person!

Please realize there is a very simple thing you can be doing to improve yourself that doesn’t cost a thousand dollars. And by improve yourself I mean surround yourself with people who give off a “vibe of prosperity”.

Who are the most successful people in your community? Take them out to lunch or breakfast and pick their brain. Pick up the tab. Thank them profusely for their time and ask them who you should contact next. Send them a hand-written thank you card right away.

Is that so tough? Do you have any idea how much information and good vibes you can capture from these people? Don’t you want to know what books they are reading? How they spend their spare time? Do they watch TV? If so, what shows? How did they get their start? What do they think you could be doing to make better use of your time? What community activities are they involved with?

Do you really think it’s possible for you to fail if the only type of people you surround yourself with are people of extraordinary integrity who are truly prosperous? And by prosperous I mean healthy, wealthy and happy. Really think about that.

And I’ll tell you what else you should be thinking about: how to find the most profitable ways to leverage your time. I know what it’s like to get up at 4:45AM to get to the studio to train my first client at 5:30 in the mornin’. I know what it’s like to get home at 8:30PM and shovel my dinner down my throat. I know all about repeating the process over and over and over. But no more.

Nowadays I know how to leverage my time. I can crank out a tele-seminar pretty much anytime I want that will deliver incredible value to my customers and make me thousands of dollars with barely any work. Yes, I’ve run more tele-seminars than I can count. But as I wrote before, Ryan Lee is THE master. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I learned from him that day. Yes, I shared a lot of my insights, and so did Alwyn Cosgrove, but somehow I still came away with tons of notes and ideas on how to make even more money running tele-seminars. Mentorship

Last year Ryan Lee and I did a 6 week group program called the Labadie and Lee Mentorship group. To say it was a success is the understatement of the century. It turned fitness pros all over the country into serious fitness entrepreneurs. And while we would have loved to turn that program into an information product we could sell it just wouldn’t have been right. There was too much personal information – hopes and dreams – that we just couldn’t sell to the rest of the industry.

Many people have asked us when we are going to do another one. Great question. While it might not be the answer you’re looking for I’m pretty certain it’s never again.

However, one of my loves is to work with people one on one. No, it’s not as profitable as coaching a whole group of people at one time. But I’ve worked with business coaches and I know from experience how much more you get out of working individually with someone. The instruction is more personal and the client/student feels much more at ease revealing what is very confidential information.

Info-products are an awesome way to learn. I buy products all the time. I also hire coaches all the time. And for all the money products have helped bring into my business, nothing compares to the coaching I’ve received. Nothing. It has made all the difference in my success.

So anyway, I usually only take clients on by referral, or I invite them personally. But I’ve gotten to a point where my info-product business is so automated – thankfully- that I’m looking for the next challenge. Your Friend is Your Enemy

I gotta thank my dad for this one. He loves cutting out articles for me that have to do with my business. When I was up north for the holidays he gave me a very interesting article on how big time fitness magazines are creating their own DVDs. Magazines like Self and Prevention.

So yes, your friend is your enemy. The same publications who can make you a household name are now your direct competition. If you create your own info products that is. Since these magazines have an enormous reach and a much bigger budget (more than likely) than you do,
how do you plan to compete?

Well, besides the fact that you’re going to have to do a great job promoting yourself and driving traffic to your website I’ll tell you what will truly make or break you. Your ability to write great
copy. It makes all the difference in the world. If you can’t write good copy- copy that gets people to take out their wallet – then you are in for a world of hurt.

Now while it did crack me up and it is a good ‘bit’ you really need to watch it from the viewpoint of a marketer to understand what the heck I’m writing about.

Did you notice how easily these people were influenced to do things?

Really think about it.

They made these folks a f r e e offer for something they wanted and they fell all over themselves
to get a piece of it.

Now really think about the call to action in your marketing. What you are asking them to do? When you are asking them to do it?

Why do you think on the infomercials they say CALL RIGHT NOW!?

Will this work for you?

Well, just to give you an example, I recently did a coaching call with a client that resulted in
him adding 500 highly targeted prosepcts to his email list in just 4 days.

And yes, in case you were wondering they all opted in themselves.

What did we do?

We made some simple changes to his marketing.

1) Set up a one page website designed to do nothing more than get people to download his no-cost e-book in exchange for their name and email.

2) Changed the call to action on everything from articles to posting on discussion forums
telling his prospects to go to his website RIGHT NOW to download it.

That’s it.

Words to live by

*NOTE: You’ll soon see why I couldn’t email you this. Pretty much all of these words will catch the eye of SPAM filters. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be using them.*

If you are a fitness professional and you don’t watch weight-loss info-mercials on a regular basis you are absolutely insane. While the vast majority of them are selling bullsh*t they are absolutely brilliant pieces of marketing that you should be learning from.

I could go on and on about all the fitness pros I know who do nothing but bitch and moan about them. That doesn’t impress me. It’s easy to complain. It takes an intelligent person to watch and learn. It takes a shrewd entrepreneur to “borrow” from the successful marketers out there so they can sell their own products and services.

So here’s your homework for 2006. Start watching info-mercials. They are usually on Saturday mornings or late at night. Learn all you can from them. Take notes. Write down all the words they use. Keep a close eye on the hot-buttons they push. Believe me, those folks know what they are doing.

Here are many of the words that I have noticed. If you work with weight-loss clients you should be using them in your marketing. If you work with a different population, like athletes or seniors or whoever, you should create a similar list.

Again, you might not like these words and phrases, but they work.

melt fat
burn
lose inches
shed
cellulite
disappear
ugly fat
hard to lose
trouble spots
trim
tone
accelerate
reduce
cravings
fat-fighting
miraculous
waistline
fight temptation
appetite
boost metabolism
sculpt
unwanted fat
specifically formulated

I’m sure you’ve seen them before. Find a way to use them in your marketing of the fitness truth and you’ll make a fortune. They work. Period.
