Have you ever stopped to wonder?
Really wonder and reflect on the things that had to happen for you to be where you are today?
Seriously… ask yourself this question.
What had to happen for me to be where I am today?
Reflecting on what has brought you to this point in your life is totally mind blowing.
So what had to happen for me to be here writing this post for all of you to see…?

The story goes…
Guy from Australia (previously a Fat KFC Manager now Fit PT) signs up to become a Fitness Director on a Cruise Ship, gets stationed in Alaska on the Norwegian Sun, meets a girl from Canada (a passenger) who makes a significant impact (but nothing really happens) then goes on to finish his contract and 7 months later flies back to Australia for some vacation time. Now, there was an opportunity to go back on Cruise Ships, but I wanted the Mediterranean and they wanted to send me back to Alaska so I gave them the thumbs down.
So both guy and girl went back to living their lives on dry land whilst remaining friends, only to then meet up again about 12 months later in girls’ home town. (I kind of pre planned that to be honest)
After 3 dates, a summer vacation, a white Christmas and a move across the other side of the world later I am happy to report that both guy and girl are happy and are looking forward to continuing a long, loving and passionate relationship.
Now, that’s the very short version of it.
So what had to happen to make all of this possible?
- I had to decide to get out of KFC and become a Personal Trainer
- I had to decide that it was time to move on from being a PT at Fitness First and throw caution to the wind and embark on an almost year long “on the high seas” journey
- I had to be in London for exactly 6 weeks before being assigned a position
- I had to be assigned to the Norwegian Sun (1 of 160 possible ships)

- I had to remain on that ship (many people had plans change at last minute or just into their contracts)
- Andrea and her family had to choose THAT Cruise Ship for their summer vacation out of dozens of possibilities
- Andrea had to have a soft spot for the Aussie accent
- I had to put myself in pretty serious debt to get here and see if it was going to work out between us (and there were no certainties – hell she hadn’t even told me that she loved me and that’s a story in itself)
- I had to leave my life, family and friends in Australia based on the feelings I had for 1 person and my other guiding light was the Fitness Industry here presented so many opportunities for the future
I want to share with you just one more story.
Jump forward to November of 2008 and I have been in Toronto for now 6 months, working at one of the local Bally’s.
Personally, Andrea and I are working out great, but when it came to my career I knew that being at Bally’s was only going to get me so far.
I had met Pat and the boys at Ryan Lee’s Bootcamp a couple of months earlier and since then they had put together a program we now know as The Bootcamp Blueprint. THIS was the opportunity that I couldn’t afford to miss out on. I knew at some level I was so much more than just a typical Big Gym kind of trainer and I figured through their experience and their coaching I would be able to break out and make it happen. So I signed up and as all of you BCBP members know, the content being delivered is awesome.
6 months later and I am only now finishing up at Bally’s.
SIX MONTHS…
Why did I take so long?
A simple case of uncertainty and waiting for “the right time”
- I had to doubt and question myself.
- I had to be hesitant in taking the plunge earlier and making it happen.
- I had to decide it wasn’t time to get out of Bally’s and on my own even though I knew I wasn’t making the most of what I was learning from The BCBP.
Now, I didn’t wait for the right time to get over here and see if my relationship was going to work. I just took the action and made it happen and persisted with whatever was thrown at me along the way.
Because of this hesitancy, this is what has to happen now.
My typical Bootcamp day now sees me getting up at 3am, walk 20 minutes to catch a 4am bus and then walk 35 minutes to my Bootcamp location. (Rain, Hail, Wind or Snowstorm) Why can’t I drive there? Because without a Canadian License I cannot get Auto Insurance and currently the people that do the driver testing are on strike and have been for nearly four months and so I cannot get a license. This, along with many other setbacks would never have existed had I not waited.
The What IF’s are also endless. What if I had only started earlier, or what if I had gotten my license last year. It is a game that I learned to quit a long time ago for it can fast become a habit and mindset that cripples you into mind submission. Reflect and learn as opposed to playing this game of perpetual pondering.
Here are the messages behind each story…
Story 1 – No matter what the odds and no matter how slight the possibility or how uncertain you may be you can have the relationship you have only dreamed about even if it means you make some incredible sacrifices. You never know where it is going to lead you.
Story 2 – Don’t wait. Because you may just find that playing the role of the Tortoise as opposed to the Hare could have you up against challenges you may have never had at all had you acted now as opposed to later.
So my question to you is…
What had to happen for you to be in the position you are in right now?
Good, bad or otherwise doesn’t matter. What matters is reflecting and learning.
I look forward to your answers and wish you all a highly successful and outstanding 2010.

AT,
Excellent post. The “look behind the veil” and honesty with which you share this story are both helpful and, I’m sure, cathartic. You display great courage and a true leaders spirit and I, for one, am honored to be a friend.
There isn’t space in this arena to expound on why I am where I am today but suffice to say, I am not where I wish to be. But with the help of God, BCBP and it’s many wonderful human resources (you know who you are) and inspirational stories such as yours I can look ahead with joy and excitement!
Thanks again for sharing,
SP
That’s a helluva story and motivating post. I can relate in many different ways. Moving past the FEAR is difficult, but when you don’t you become paraylized and OPPURTUNITY passes you by. Looking forward to hearing a great update in 2010…you got the right people behind you.
Mr. Steve Payne
Thanks s much for the support and good words mate. You are a true gentleman and the Honor is also mine
My very best for you, your family and your business for 2010 and beyond
Adam
Hey Michael
Most happy you took motivation out of the post mate and thanks for your kind words. You’re exactly right FEAR has the power to cripple us if we let it – or it can drive us relentlessly to discover and become so much more.
All the best for you in 2010
Cheerss
Adam
Yo Adam!
Man, that was a great post. I’m going through a lot of crazy things in my life right now as well (both good and bad, both personal and business), and many times, it can be pretty hard to keep the motivation to go on. Uncertainty can not only bring you down, and be de-motivating (is that a word?), but can cause you to almost lose hope. Things always look good when you’re at the top and successful – but when you’re on your way to that point, it can be a mighty tough road…esp if you’re treading on unknown ground, and are doing something for the first time.
If this year (which has been awesome for me in some ways, and absolutely BRUTAL for me in others) has taught me anything, it’s that EVERYTHING happens for a reason.
It’s just up to us to be vigilant, attentive, introspective, and speculative enough to determine just what that reason is.
Keep on keepin’ on brother!
